Interesting Old Book: Holy Deadlock By A.P. Herbert
Author: Gareth Eastwood Topic: Literature
This novel has a historical significance transcending the insights into the past that we gain from it. The author first published it in 1934. In 1936, as a member of the British Parliament he introduced a divorce law reform bill which became the Matrimonial Causes Act, 1937. The book was written to highlight the absurdities of existing divorce laws in preparation for reform. It succeeded marvelously.
Interesting Old Books: Cat's Cradle By Kurt Vonnegut (1963)
Author: Gareth Eastwood Topic: Literature
Reading this book in the 2000's you gain a different perspective of the author's meanings that the reader of the 1960's would have had. He asked the insightful question "What else are the scientists who created the bomb capable of inventing?"
The Mad Doctor by F J Thwaites - A Brief Review
Author: Gareth Eastwood Topic: Literature
I discovered an old hardback copy of F J Thwaites' 1935 novel 'The Mad Doctor'. It was eminently readable.
Book Review - The Good Earth
Author: Gareth Eastwood Topic: Literature
A light and breezy, powerfully penetrating, thoroughly charming depiction of social travesty, abuse and injustice among good and decent people seems like a highly contradictory description, but when the book is Pearl S Buck's classic The Good Earth, it's accurate.
Favourite Books - She (Who Must Be Obeyed) H. Rider Haggard 1886
Author: Gareth Eastwood Topic: Literature
The original 'She Who Must Be Obeyed' was a nasty piece of work, driven by an omnipotent desire to somehow effect the reincarnation of her (very) long-dead lover.
